Nata just started rhyming two years ago, and she’s already on a roll. In 2018, the Franklin, New Jersey MC dropped her first freestyle on Instagram. In 2019, she released her debut EP, Finally. Now, in 2020, we can expect another project.
One of the things that makes Nata special is her confident, measured delivery. On “Art Thou,” Nata rhymes over a sample-based beat produced by Fleur. The song speaks to losing religious faith and rediscovery, as well as resiliency and restoration. Speaking about the video for “Art Thou,” directed by Wav Media, Nata tells me, “My video was inspired by my lyrics and the ancient, cathedral feeling I established. I inserted myself into the paintings because there is a lack of Black representation in classic art.” This combination of resiliency and restoration in the song, while exploring Black representation in the video, is an example of Nata’s knack for placing a message in her work.
