Absolute Essential Soul

By AMIR SAID (SA’ID)

As with all soul music, there’s a incredibly strong sense of feeling that is underscored by an ironic mix of personal pain, collective oppression, and joy of the shoulders of hope. That being said, Donny Hathaway qualifies as the personification of soul. Having trained under Curtis Mayfield as a house producer in Chicago, and even serving as a member in the Curtis Mayfield-produced band, The Mayfield Singers, Donny Hathaway would eventually go on to become one of the most powerful figures in all of soul music.

The music and video below is presented here for the purpose of scholarship.

So soulful. Man, I’ve known of Mr. Hathaway ever since I was a child, but did not know till my mom told me to use some of his music to sample. Man he is amazing. “I Love the Lord; He Heard My Cry, Pts. 1 & 2” is such a journey.
