Funk Outfit Gives Clinic on Drumwork and Smooth Groove

By AMIR SAID (SA’ID)

I really dig the drumwork on this Cymande classic, in particular, I like how the hi-hat pushes and shuffles along with the kick. I incorporated that “push” concept into the way I create drum frameworks.

The music and video below is presented here for the purpose of scholarship.

What are some of your tips or techniques used when incorporating the “push” feel with your drums? Good post.

    Cheeks,
One technique that I always use to create that “push” feel is that I use different hi-hat combinations (sometimes up to three different hi-hats) with alternating pitch and velocity levels. Also, I’m always mindful of keeping my kick patterns as straight forward (basic) as possible.
