Sizzling Sound From Unsung Soulstress

By Amir Said (Sa’id)

One of the greatest things about diggin’ in the crates is the numerous times that you come across great recording artists who never made it big, but who were just as heavy as the heavies. Perfect example: Ann Sexton. Not considered a soul powerhouse in the vein of let’s say Aretha Franklin, but nonetheless, Sexton’s vocal dexterity and song command is certainly in league with the Queen of soul and other top soul vocalists of the same period (ca. early 1970s). Here on “You’re Losing Me,” perhaps her biggest hit, Sexton gets out in front of a funk number that drives hard. From the rumbling bass line, to the popcorn drumwork, “You’re Losing Me” absolutely sizzles, making Ann Sexton’s “scorned-woman” lyrics rupture like a fight in a juke joint.
