By Amir Said (Sa’id)

“Orrin Keepnews, Producer” is a podcast series created and produced by Bret Primack. The series is broken into “chapters,” wherein famed jazz producer Orrin Keepnews recalls some of the jazz greats that he worked with. Here, in chapter 6, Keepnews remembers pianist McCoy Tyner.

Before branching off and leading his own band, McCoy Tyner was the pianist for the infamous John Coltrane Quartet. In this video, Keepnews speaks on his first awareness of Tyner, and how the two ultimately came to together to record Horizon, one of Tyner’s finest efforts ever recorded.
